Avid Scorch App Reviews

Cannot recognize latest version of Sibelius (8.3)

This problem continued long times ago!

Good but...

The antiquated method of adding files by having to connect to iTunes on your computer then drag and drop files is annoying. It requires pre-planning what you need to open. The app should be able to open files stored in Dropbox, Box or Google Drive. Otherwise I have to go home to my desktop computer to get what I need.

Useless

What exactly are we supposed to do with this program? I wanted to view and edit the compositions I created on my macbook, but there was no way to even see them. When I try to go to the "store" page, it flips over and flips right back. This app is less than useless for composers, and wont make you guys much money as long as it wont even stay on the up-sell page. Useless.

"Modify Scores"?!

Two of he words used in the Scorch app promo ads were "Modify Scores..." Ive found no way to modify my own scores on this app. Only to view them & maybe transpose... Silly me for thinking I would be able to actually compose & edit on my iPad 2. smh So it seems cool for viewing but not for actually composing or to "Modify Scores". If theres a composition app for iPad out there please let me know?

Yes

Great thing for Sibelius users! A lot of bugs need to be worked out for it to be 5 star. Playback work for awhile but not now!

High hopes but not ready

The key differentiator for Scorch is playback. On my iPad 2 with iOs 4.3, playback simply doesnt work. Support consists of Faq with the typical "reboot your device". I did and it didnt. I was also looking for ease in buying scores. But I could find no preview or sample option. I refuse to pay full price for a score just to find out which arrangement it is. Scorch powered sheet music sites typically allow you to see and hear the first page. So, for now, I am pretty disappointed with this app and will keep looking.

features right, stability is an issue

This app has particular features missing from the Scorch plug-in and so in that sense finally provides what Scorch should have been all along, particularly in the control panel that allows individual voice-mute/solo control--this is a feature Ive wanted to see in Scorch for a long time. The other feature that is lacking is some sort of hierarchical structure for the content. This lack may be a limitation of the iTunes-based file transfer method. Apps I have that support folder hierarchies generally use a WIFI connection for file transfer. But then we get to performance, and here the app needs a lot of work. It will play, contrary to most of the reviews at the top when the app was still selling for $8, and I passed on the purchase. At $2 I was willing to experiment, and what I found is not ready for regular use. I noticed some problem loading my own scores--at times I saw a split screen, half my score, the other half the loading meter, stuck on not done, but it would eventually load. Playback started normally but when playing with the mute buttons, I locked up the GUI in a matter of seconds--it would accept no further touch input. "Exiting" and "restarting" the app, playback was still running but further touches resulted in the app crashing. So fix whats there and give me folders, and Ill be happy.

Very helpful app

As a choral director lacking skills at the piano, I use this as the accompaniment for my choir. I scan my pieces via Photoscore... Tweak it a bit, and then enjoy some very flexible accompaniment. I plan on buying some Bluetooth speakers so I can stream it with enough volume so my choir can hear it. Five stars!

Typical Avid disdain for quality

After working at first install, and without any update to the app or the OS, Scorch now refuses to connect to the net, telling me to check my connection. It never connects to the store, and when trying to refresh, simply quits. After reading other musicians reviews, I realize this has such a low priority for QA within Avid it should not even have seen the light of an iPad. Pathetic and inexcusable, like many of Avids decisions across their entire product line.

not for working musicians at this point

The scorch ipad app is just another novelty app that does a couple tricks and lets you buy things. Without a functional indexing and filing system it is not a useful tool for an actual working musician. Pretty disappointing. Sibelius is such a well made and powerful tool I thought that the scorch app might have some basic professional uses. Those big book like icons for each piece of music alone make it ridiculous to catalog a set of music. I often transcribe 30 to 60 songs a week. It would be impossible to find them on stage when the singer calls something different. Right now I have about 400 tunes I would like to transfer into my ipad. There is no way scorch could handle it as far as I can tell. Its kinda nice that it will play a melody for you but that feature wont help much on the bandstand. Its good looking too but what difference does that make if it cant even keep track of a basic set list ?

Cant Transfer

I drag files from my hard drive. They show up on the computer screen as being on my iPad right along with the preloaded files. They dont show up on the iPad though. Ive successfully transferred files to Pages, Numbers, and a PDF reader app I have. The preloaded files work fine.

Good start, but fairly useless.

I really like every feature of Scorch, but it is missing the most important feature of all; the ability to print. Without that, Scorch is a mere novelty item with no real value. Even scorch for browsers is way behind the curve being usable in only Firefox while running in 32 bit mode. It could only have been written by non-musicians. Musicians need and appreciate stuff that has practical applications. Sadly, scorn remains more like a game than a real functional music product . Maybe one day it will grow up.

Crashes every time

I just got my copy of Scorch on a new iPAD 2. Im an avid Sibelius user and a professional musician. I like the idea of being able to perform from these scores from my iPad to my piano. However, the program crashes everytime I load a file. It ran when first installed, but not now.

Playback Quality is Horrendous

Playback is extremely tinny. A download with a reasonable MIDI driver would be a nice touch.

Not Useful

Waste of money. Cant open scorch files from web pages on iPad.

Needs a lot of work

I like the idea of this app, but you have a long way to go before you should be charging any money for it. It crashes almost every time I try and change a setting, the playback doesnt work at all, when I open the jazz example and try and view just the alto part, my only options are those for a string quartet. There isnt usually a Violin 2 part in a big band. Im sure there are probably more issues as well, but those are the ones I found in the first 30 seconds of playing with it. Back to the drawing board, folks.

Sound Doesnt play

Dont get this, the sound on iPad 2 doesnt play. Maybe it is just me, but it is a waste of money. Wait for the update.

Doesnt open Sibelius files

I emailed my SIBELIUS files to my Ipad2 and when I try to open in Avid Scorch Im told there is a problem opening the files The file appears in Scorch but when I click to open it either doesnt open or opens but no play arrow appears to play it!

Glitches

Fix the glitches

Buggy and lacking basic features for gigging musicians

Others have mentioned the stability problems with this app particularly surrounding playback. One glaring missing feature is the ability to create set lists from within your score library. Im a gigging musician and I have lead sheets for several hundred songs. Id love to use this app to access my entire library but without the ability to create a set list where I can flow seamlessly from one song to the next, this app is pretty useless to me. Most of the building blocks are there to make this app great including basic editing features like transpose. Fix the stability problems and add a fluid set list feature and this would be golden. Until then, it doesnt serve my needs.
